Horse-man-ship Mentality - Resistance-Part of Horsemanship, How?
Part 2 of 2
Cappel Cowboy Wisdom -
Resistance is part of the horsemanship process!
This is just a horse being a horse. The awareness of the rider is the "key" difference here. Anyone can work through these situations by simply staying steady, waiting, and letting that horse seek a better way. It is in the search that a horse will learn to respond favorably to you if you do not become the problem by being overly aggressive. What I mean by that is pulling too hard with your hands, using your legs in a frightening way such as kicking or spurring etc.
Here is where you will need to develop the skill to meet the horse with the exact amount of pressure with which they are resisting. Certainly not "more" or "less". This clarifies your boundary in such a way that it becomes obvious to the horse that their attempts to break through are futile and they will then yield to it.
Process recap:
*The solution is to let the horse realize in their mind that they are the one causing the issue, therefore they can do something to completely relieve it.
*It is the rider’s job to recognize their “try” and to “let” the horse feel the “sweet spot” of release at that very instance.
This horse training process is essential because this is where the opportunity to establish agreeable communication with your horse will flourish.
