Horse-man-ship Mentality - Resistance-Part of Horsemanship, How?

Part 1 of 2

Cappel Cowboy Wisdom -

Resistance is part of the horsemanship process!

You are going to encounter resistance when you start training your horse. You can sit on one and allow them to carry you where they wish, and you will not likely encounter any resistance. However, when you decide you want them to carry themselves differently, change direction, or whatever it may be, you are going to be met with some sort of conflict. Why, simply because the horse will not want to give up control, and they yet have been convinced that listening to the rider’s direction is the best deal for them.

The fact is how you manage the moment of conflict between you and the horse is going to either help or hinder your relationship with them. I view this simply as an opportunity to help the horse overcome this misunderstanding and change it to that of understanding in their mind which will be soft and resistance-free. Therefore, the process of supporting the horse through this mental conflict in their mind is one of the best horse training tools you have available to you. You cannot buy it and you might not even know where it is at this moment, but you will find it!

The question worth asking is, are you ready to deal with it when it presents itself?

Are you going to take your opportunity to help that horse get soft, quiet, and come into agreement with you OR are you going to give in to the horse and cause that resistance to be stronger the next time?

Do not feel like you gave up, it might just of been the next move in your journey so that when the horse comes home you will be able to rise to the occasion and go forward. D/C
