Horse-man-ship Mentality – Natural Horsemanship – Fight or Flight Response

Cappel Cowboy Wisdom

In my experience, one of the most profound aspects of working with horses is understanding their “fight or flight” instinct. Every horse, in a moment of fear or uncertainty, will naturally respond by either choosing to flee or standing its ground. Recognizing and respecting this response is crucial to building a genuine connection. when a horse steps into a new or challenging environment. I focus on finding that “sweet spot of release” where the horse feels safe and relaxed. This approach creates a “path of least resistance” allowing the horse to move forward with trust rather than tension.

I teach people to hold a “Clear Mental Picture” of what they want to achieve. I know that a horse’s first instinct is like that of a rabbit sensing a trap—it seeks a safe exit. If escape is not an option, the horse may feel the need to resist or even fight. By respecting this natural behavior, I can help the horse to understand it does not need to choose fear. Instead through patience, timing, and a compassionate approach. I guide the horse toward a place of curiosity and cooperation. This way we find our way together, grounded in trust and mutual respect.

When I work with a horse, I give them the space to make the decision themselves. If they choose to flee or become tense, I remain calm and allow the horse to experience the situation. If they fight, I provide enough pressure for them to see that resistance is not the best option, but I always release pressure at the right moment. In this way, the horse learns that staying calm and connecting with me is the path of the least resistance.
